National Gadgets Examiner Rating: B+
On Saturday, the 64GB version of the Surface Pro 2 was discounted to $899 at all Fry's Electronics and Best Buy stores. It has been available at Best Buy and most Microsoft stores for the past two weeks.
Microsoft released the original Surface Pro last February. Although we thought the device was groundbreaking , a lot of other critics complained about the battery life, the Windows 8 operating system, and the weight of the device. The first two problems have been fixed. The device still makes a really heavy tablet. But if you consider it a laptop hybrid, it is rather light.
Basic specs:
10.81 x 6.81 x 0.53 inches 2 pounds (without Touch Cover or Type Cover) Intel 4th Generation Core i5, 1.7GHz processor 10.6-inch widescreen IPS display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution 64GB or 128GB flash storage (with 4GB RAM) or 256GB (with 8GB RAM), microSD card slot Intel® HD5000 series Iris Pro graphics Windows 8 64-Bit operating system One USB-3 port, one micro-HDMI port
Build and design
The two-pound Surface Pro 2 is just as heavy as the first one. We were able to excuse the first Surface Pro for being this heavy, but there is no excuse for the Surface Pro 2, especially since technology changes rapidly. You would think Microsoft could have made the Surface Pro 2 at least a little thinner and slightly lighter. However, Microsoft packs a lot in this device and the weight and height shouldn't be too much of a disability.
Screen
Most are claiming that the 10.6-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution screen is the same as the previous generation, but we have noticed a slight difference. There is no need to download a different graphics driver; the screen is slightly more saturated than the previous Surface Pro. We also notice that the viewing angles are a little bit stronger.
Some may say that given the resolution on Apple's devices, a 1920 x 1080 screen is behind the times. However, it's still hard to complain about a 1080p screen on a 10.6-inch device. Microsoft's Surface Pro 2 screen is still one of the best.
