House keys are so 2014 with two separate offerings from August and Kwikset.
Recently, I was able to get two fully electronic and smartphone ready locks from August and Kwikset;
The August Smart Lock Kwikset Kevo
Let’s start with a few facts that are parallel to each system.

The locks were installed on existing door frames. The August Smart Lock was installed on my front door over a Defiant deadbolt. Defiant is one of the many that August is compatible with. See the entire list HERE . The Kwikset replaced my back door deadbolt. As a side bar, Defiant and Kwikset share the same keyblank, so I was able to rekey the Kwikset to my Defiant house key which was a plus.
Once both locks were installed, it was time to download the apps. The app feature was tested on an iPhone 5c, an iPod 5g (both on iOS8) and a Samsung Galaxy Tab3 with 4g service running Kit Kat. Install and set up of both apps was quick and easy.
Once I went through the arbitrary setup of email addresses, and Bluetooth setup, the rest was history.
Each lock was smooth and instant when evoking the lock or unlock feature. One extra feature that August has is the optional August Connect. This device, once connected to your home network allows you full remote access and viewing of your locks status. It also allow you to remotely unlock and lock from where ever you are.
In all, there is only 1 con to 1 of these locks. It is the fact that the Kwikset Kevo is simply that, a Kwikset. If you get it, it can only be keyed to another Kwikset or a Defiant.
The August Smart Key however, is compatible to many. There is no re-keying necessary, and frankly has an easier install when the novice is involved.
